Paolo Olbi

Bookbinding

"In 1975 in Venice, I started a new line of production for my environment, that of artistic bookbinding articles for gifts. At that time it was a matter of experimenting with new combinations between the typical workings of my city and traditional bookbinding. In this way, I created pieces of art that were innovative in their genre, objects that today are frequently imitated, often using more modern instruments and therefore different in nature from my product."

Paolo Olbi's artistic craftsmanship began in 1962, when he learned his trade "in the workshop", as was the custom in the past, and then specialized by going to study in France. The workshop creates gift items in leather and marbled paper, such as diaries for notes, telephone books, photo albums, table sets, photo frames, notebooks, conference folders, tickets and cards with capitals printed by hand at the printing press. The items produced by Paolo Olbi are made with the methods and materials of traditional bookbinding: hand-printed with original proprietary designs, lined with paper printed with a letterpress, while leather and eco-leather are hot-printed with gold or embossed. In order to satisfy the requests of a part of the clientele that is even more attentive to the environment, the vegetable-tanned leathers, which are less polluting since they are produced entirely with organic materials, have been joined by materials such as eco-leather with a touch of originality and inventiveness. For the most particular art bindings, the bookbindery also collaborates with other artisanal artists specializing in marble, glass and silver making each piece unique, accompanied by a certificate of quality.
