Ca’ del Sol

Masks and costumes

"I put on little pieces of paper. I start at the edge. First the eyebrows, then the nose and mouth. One day I make a laughing mask. One day I make a crying mask. One day I make a beautiful mask. One day I make an ugly mask (...) When I put little pieces of paper on their noses I see that they breathe and are alive. But then again, maybe they are real and we are masks."

Hamid Seddighi arrived in Italy from Iran in 1979 to study architecture in Rome. During his stay, he decided to visit Venice where he learned the art of "maschèrer" (mask maker) and thus ended up staying much longer than the six years he had initially planned for his studies. In his atelier "Ca' del Sol", together with his partner Mahima Mercedes, the craftsman works with passion and mastery to create masks and costumes for carnival, parties, theater, and any other event. The materials used for the construction of the masks are mainly papier-mâché, leather, ceramics, iron, and, of our invention, the light and seductive use of starched lace. On this basis we develop the precious work of decorating the mask, a treasure trove of ancient techniques as well as a theater of inexhaustible inventiveness, since the amazing and fantastic effects are achieved by any means: gilding in gold leaf, silver, copper, precious fabrics, ribbons, ancient paints, enamels, earths, patinas, Swarovski crystals, lace, etc. The attention to tradition combined with the search for new models makes the artisans of Ca' del Sol an important reality on the Venetian scene. Opened in 1986, the workshop-shop has become a creative space in which the artisans express their skills and imagination and where ideas are born through constant dialogue with the needs of the public.
