La Colombina Venezia

A little world of stories to wear

"My creations are small magical stories to wear, like the story of a beautiful Piazza San Marco or that of kimonos lying in the sun to dry rather than the story of Alice in Wonderland."

Elisa Zaffina was born in 1975 in a Milan with a thousand lights shining onto her skin and blood the colors and warmth of deep Calabria. A diploma in visual communications marked the first stage of her journey to discover images and stories. This was followed by a degree in history and many years of work in bookstores, with opportunities to start collecting stories on printed paper, narratives of words and stories of images. From the bookstore to the workshop: one day Elisa decided to put on an apron and learn the art of papier-mâché, listening to its story until she never wanted to go back. There were years of experiments, tests, successes and failures until the right technique arrived and with it the desire to create a personal and recognizable world: the Colombina masks and jewelry, especially round pendants, with which the artisan assembles stories. Elisa paints, takes apart and reassembles with the technique of collage pieces of a Venice and a whole world still unknown, which is presented to her walking through the streets of the historic city. With her earrings, the circumference of the circle turns and turns among ideologies, conquests, miniatures and colors, finding its center in the city of Venice. With Colombina masks, paper is no longer just a tool to study and observe, but a tangible material in all its beauty to make and wear.
