Lacemaker

"Without passion a lace maker doesn't continue for long, especially in a world that is as fast-paced as ours! Lace making requires many hours of commitment and a lot of patience. Attention is necessary because, since this is a creative work, you have to feel it inside yourself, create it with just needle and thread, and that is not possible to do superficially."

Original Burano lace is distinguished by the extreme complexity of the design and the executive technique, the use of very fine threads (cotton, linen, silk, gold or silver). Consequently, the workmanship is extremely long, for which a study and application often decades old is a must. Sandra Mavaracchio is a doyenne among the master lacemakers of Burano. She began to cultivate the art of needle lace at the age of eight, learning it from her mother who, in turn, learned it from her own grandmother. The artisan has improved in other techniques (such as the "air stitch" or the "rede stitch") in order to try her hand at drawing on oiled paper and the subsequent warping of the same. Her creations are based on the classic models of the island of Burano and typically inspired by religious, floral, or fauna themes, but not neglecting the creation of new subjects of personal taste.
