Venice Original is pleased to present La Colombina and its founder, Elisa Zaffina, an artisan who conveys the magic of her art through unique creations. Born in Milan in 1975, Elisa carries with her the colors and warmth of deep Calabria. Her background in visual communications and history, combined with several years of experience in a bookstore, has led her to collect stories on printed paper and visual tales.
Her artistic journey takes a significant turn when driven by passion, she decides to learn the art of papier-mâché. This new adventure is marked by years of experimentation, successes, and failures that culminate in the creation of her personal and recognizable world: the masks and jewelry of La Colombina. Using the collage technique, Elisa assembles pieces of Venice and both known and unknown stories, transforming paper into enchanting tales and fables to wear.
The name "Colombina" refers to the mask that Elisa loves to adorn, decorating it with unique methods after collaborating with experienced mask-making artisans. She creates wearable jewelry, such as paper earrings enhanced with Murano pearls, decorated with the collage technique. The round shapes of the earrings lend themselves well to reflecting unique stories and artistic interpretations: they are customizable and suitable for every mood.
The enthusiasm surrounding her creations has led to the birth of numerous collections, each telling a story. The "Kimono Collection," for instance, originates from a collection of images dedicated to Japan in the 1920s, during the Taishō era. For the "India Collection," Elisa drew inspiration from a catalog of Indian fabrics. She was captivated by the recurring theme of blossoming, which symbolizes life and rebirth after the dry season.
Elisa herself expresses the meaning of her works with the following phrase: "My creations are small magical stories to wear, like the tale of a beautiful San Marco Square or that of kimonos drying in the sun or the fairy tale of Alice in Wonderland." With each piece, Elisa Zaffina invites us to carry a fragment of magic, stories, and tradition into our everyday lives.
