In Venetian culture, the mask has always played a central role, symbolizing freedom and transgression against the rigid social norms of the Republic of Venice. Masks were not merely a means of entertainment, but also a way to surrender to play and illusion, expressing meanings that ranged from festivity to immorality. To counteract the moral decay of the Venetians, the Serenissima promulgated regulations regarding the use of masks, limiting their use to the Carnival periods.
In this context of tradition, the showroom Casin dei Nobili was established in May 2002, created by Stefano Oliani and Valentina Pala. Located in a charming setting that includes a small internal courtyard, the shop specializes in baroque-style Venetian masks made of papier-mâché and ceramics, enriched with authentic ostrich and capon feathers, gold and silver leaf, Swarovski crystals, and pearls. The name “Casin dei Nobili” evokes the Venetian dialect, recalling the ancient house to rendezvous and casinos frequented by Venetian nobility, often in masquerade. These places were small public or private spaces where people of all social classes would gather to chat, play, and drink. The "ridotti "and casinos were fundamental to Venetian social life, especially in the 1700s, when there were 136 such venues. Not all were centres of vice; some also served as music academies and literary circles, hosting lavish parties and dinners.
The masks, including the typical "Bauta" and the intriguing "Moretta", provided participants with the privacy needed to enjoy themselves without fear of judgment. This connection between masked traditions and Venetian social life makes Casin dei Nobili not just a place to purchase unique works of art, but also a reference point for rediscovering a fascinating tradition.
Stefano, who moved to Venice from the Mantuan province in 1987, has created a space where passion for art takes shape. After working as a stage designer and theatrical costume designer, he resumed his vocation by creating unique Neo-Baroque masks, giving each one an unparalleled and distinctive charm compared to other productions. With Valentina's savoir-faire, the boutique quickly became a meeting point for VIPs and celebrities, a truly magical space immersed in artistry.
In this showroom, visitors can admire creations made using techniques that blend tradition and innovation, employing bronze moulds and resin to produce masks that reflect the opulence and richness of Venetian aesthetics. Each mask features a unique design with different patterns and colours. Additionally, it is possible to request customized masks, fostering a direct bond between the artisan and the customer.
Casin dei Nobili stands out as a meeting point of craftsmanship and luxury, affirming its prominent position in the creative landscape of Venice. Upon entering the workshop, guests are welcomed by a nearly magical atmosphere, where lights and colours reflect, transporting everyone to the splendour of a glorious past. It is a place where the tradition of masks merges with contemporary creativity, offering a unique experience that celebrates the beauty and art of Venice.
