Guido Capitanio: a life of guitar making

Venice Original is pleased to present Guido Capitanio, a renowned master luthier from Venice who combines traditional craftsmanship with innovative creative vision in the construction of classical guitars. Born in Venice in 1960, Guido developed an early passion for woodworking, influenced by his uncle, a respected naval officer with expertise in model ship building. This early passion for working with wood led him to express his talent through lutherie starting in 2003, embracing craftsmanship with dedication and relentless curiosity.

In 2006, Guido transformed the family business from a grocery store into an atelier dedicated to the construction and repair of classical guitars. Located in the Castello district, his workshop is situated on Via Garibaldi, between the Arsenale and the Biennale d'Arte, just a few minutes from Piazza San Marco. The workshop's large windows display musical instruments entirely handcrafted, inviting passersby and enthusiasts to enter and discover the secrets and beauty of lutherie.

Guido is known for his discerning selection of top-quality solid wood, sourced from trusted suppliers, and for using French polishing, a technique that requires precision and which he applies personally by hand. This attention to detail is reflected in the extraordinary quality and uniqueness of each instrument he produces, with custom designs that meet the specific requests of each client.

Each guitar is born from the fusion of art and science, reflecting his personal explorations and continuous dialogue with professional musicians. Guido considers direct interaction with musicians essential, as it provides valuable feedback for refining his construction techniques. This has led to the creation of distinctive models such as "La Serenissima," symbolizing the elegance and power of the Republic of Venice, "La Storica," inspired by the renowned Spanish luthier Antonio de Torres Jurado, and "La Moderna," which meets modern musical needs by incorporating techniques from José Luis Romanillos and Daniel Friederich.

In his workshop, Guido also offers repair and maintenance services for plucked instruments and opens his space to enthusiasts who wish to test the available guitars. Each instrument is not only a vehicle for music but also a work of art that captures the essence of Venetian tradition and modern innovation.

Guido Capitanio masterfully represents the artisanal heritage of Venice, continuing to nurture a passion reflected in the wood and harmonious notes his instruments can produce, carrying on a tradition that resonates in the heart of Venice and beyond.
