When it comes to lutes, the essence of sound truly lies within the instrument itself, and for luthier Davide Pusiol, this philosophy fuels his craftsmanship. Just a few steps from the charming Campo Santa Maria Formosa in the sestiere of Castello, you’ll find his workshop, marked by a distinct yellow and red neon sign and walls lined with hanging guitars. Inside, Davide explains the profound connection between the guitar's soundboard and back, revealing how the internal “chain” supports sound production, much like an essential beam. Surrounded by acoustic and classical guitars—some of which he has crafted himself—Davide shares his journey as an artisan, having spent over 20 years perfecting his art across Germany, Switzerland, and North Africa. Upon returning to Italy, he first opened a shop in Portogruaro before finally settling in Venice. His passion is beautifully encapsulated in his “Serenissima” guitar, dedicated to the city he loves. This remarkable instrument features gothic-style windows, a neck reminiscent of architectural arches, and intricate mother-of-pearl inlays, including a gondola symbolizing Venice itself. Among his prized creations are archtop guitars, distinguished by their violin-like soundboards, and the “Guitar of Peace,” which bears the inscription “SHALOM” in Hebrew—a heartfelt call for peace. Adorned with mother-of-pearl olive branches and a peace dove, this guitar was presented at the Cannaregio Ghetto during the Day of Remembrance a few years ago. In the workshop, the rich scents of various types of wood—such as spruce from Val di Fiemme, olive, rosewood, ebony, mahogany, and more—fill the air as Davide carefully crafts and repairs his beautiful instruments. Each piece is handmade with a deep love for the materials that play a vital role in his daily rituals, including cutting, bending, and milling. He employs techniques that demand time and care, soaking ebony for days to mold it seamlessly into the guitars, and using steam to shape solid materials into ethereal sounds. The atmosphere is further enlivened by the enthusiasts who stop by to greet him and try out the instruments, making the calle resonate with music. Davide is fascinated by the number of people who play the guitar, appreciating its accessibility and versatility for both solo and group performances. Inspired by his experiences, he dreams of opening a school for aspiring luthiers right in the heart of Venice, aiming to revive ancient traditions while embracing the future of craftsmanship. On several evenings, the workshop hosts guitarists from around the world for intimate acoustic concerts that are open to all.
