Mask-making with Gualtiero Dall'Osto: Master in Venetian Masks and Costumes

Meet Gualtiero Dall'Osto, a master artisan whose journey began at the prestigious Academy of Fine Arts in Venice. Under the tutelage of the legendary Emilio Vedova, Gualtiero honed his skills and collaborated with esteemed theaters and choreographers, including the renowned Maurice Bejart.

For over twenty years, Gualtiero has been the driving force behind "Mascheranda," one of the most extravagant events of the Venetian Carnival. His passion for the craft led to the co-founding of the "Compagnia l'Arte dei Mascareri" in 2014, a cultural association that celebrates the traditional art of Venetian mask-making.

Together with his wife Giuliana and a dedicated team, Gualtiero leads Tragicomica, a mask workshop and costume atelier that continues to uphold the rich tradition of this important and famous side of Venetian craftsmanship. Here, in an atmosphere brimming with creativity, they craft exquisite masks and costumes from materials such as papier mâché, iron, and leather. These creations are not just art pieces but are transformations that carry the magical essence of Venice.

Visitors to the atelier have the unique opportunity to participate in workshops and demonstrations, learning the art of mask-making from a true Master, the "mascarer." It's a chance to immerse oneself in a tradition that has captivated imaginations for centuries.

If you can't make it to Venice, you can still experience the magic by exploring the selection of masks available on veniceoriginal.it. Each piece is a testament to the skill and creativity of Gualtiero and his team, offering a cherished glimpse into the artistry of Venetian masks.
