Martina Purisiol: Ceramics Inspired by Venice in the hearth of Castello, Venice

In the vibrant sestiere (district) of Castello, Venice, Martina Purisiol has dedicated over thirty years to perfecting the art of ceramics. Nevertheless, Martina's work is not just about ceramics; it’s about capturing the essence of Venice itself. Her deep connection to Venice is striking in every piece she creates, each one a tribute to the city's unique charm and architectural as well as naturalistic grandeur.

Her journey as a ceramist has led her to collaborate with numerous artists, seeking new inspirations and innovative solutions. Questoequeo is her workshop, a treasure trove of unique creations, each reflecting the beauty of Venice. One of her signature designs includes necklaces inspired by the natural geometry of shells, seamlessly merging the Gothic architectural elements of palaces like Ca D'Oro and Scala Contarini del Bovolo. There are also plenty of references to water – a symbol deeply rooted in the Venetian identity, that you will find in the aquamarine glass tiles, which Murano's glass masters make especially for her. These are then decorated with unique maiolica shapes depicting symbols of the Serenissima Republic.

Beyond jewelry and tiles, Martina's collections feature an array of evocative pieces. Her 'faces of Venice' collection showcases home decor pieces that incorporate human faces, symbolizing the living spirit of the city. Ceramic clocks designed to measure time double as unique decorative pieces, while her beautifully crafted ceramic plates echo the lagoon city’s narrative.

Martina also takes pride in creating custom orders, including crests and 'oselle' (coin-medallion) in ceramic, wood, and Murano glass. Her dedication and skill have earned her a place in numerous competitions, such as the Campo dei Bochaleri for the best wine goblet.

"For me, Venice emerges, it oozes from the walls when you walk, it seems to be manifesting itself for you in that moment," Martina reflects. This profound sentiment is evident in her meticulously crafted pieces, each designed to evoke a sense of wonder and connection to Venice.

Visitors will find Martina’s workshop in Castello, the largest and one of the most authentic sestieri in Venice. Castello boasts a rich history and local culture, offering a glimpse into the true essence of Venetian life.
